Rota is located to the west of El Puerto de Santa Maria. It's an old village seaside town with a picturesque main square. The population is 25,000. Two of the main architechtural features are a castle that has been extensively restored and a beautiful 15th Century church.
Rota has an American-Spanish military base next to the village.
Rota is well known for its beautiful beaches. La Costilla is considered by many to be the best beach in Spain. It's right at the foot of the town and stretches for 4 kilometres. The waters are crystal clear and the sand is fine and golden. The beach is edged by massive pine trees.
The local wine, known as tintilla, is made with dark, ripe grapes. It can be found in the numerous bodegas spread over the old town, most notably El Gato which produces its own wine.
Rota offers a wide program of festivities such a Carnival (February) , Holy Week (April), Spring Fair (May) , Urta Festival (August) , the Patron Saint Festivities (October)
Rota takes all the ingredients of its dishes from the fields and the sea. Among its specialties are “Urta a la Roteña” , a typical dish made with fish and products of the land, the “Urta Soup”, the “Arranque Roteño”, the “Berza”, the “Tortillas de Camarones”, the “ortiguillas” , the “Pescado Frito” ,
Although most of the tourists here are Spanish, Rota has a number of bars and restaurants catering to international tourism. It's a growing resort.
